Styles of Advocacy and Opposition by Group
Full (or Professional) Advocacy
In the Moment:Unabashed support and campaigning; will vote for change.
Afterward: Victory! Next, building on it, shoring it up, and/or moving to a new cause.
Vocal Advocacy
In the Moment: Open support; will vote for change.
Afterward: Victory! May take up a related or new cause.
Selective Advocacy
In the Moment: Will discuss with receptive groups; will vote for change.
Afterward:(More subdued) victory! Will discuss with an increasingly large circle as cultural norms shift. May take up a new cause, but less driven to do so.
Private Advocacy
In the Moment:Possible discomfort; will discuss only with a small circle, but will vote for change.
Afterward:As comfort level grows, will become embarrassed by past reluctance.
Not Engaged
In the Moment:Not important, out of apathy, a different focus or genuine lack of interest.
Afterward:"Ehh," "Hmm" or "I was for it all along."
Private Opposition
In the Moment: Discomfort; will discuss only with a small circle; will vote against change.
Afterward: When the sky doesn't fall, typically will become embarrassed by past positions and will avoid discussing them. (A genuine change of heart can occur, but rarely will they openly acknowledge error and express regret.)
Selective Opposition
In the Moment: Will discuss with receptive groups, and will vote against change.
Afterward: Will still grumble, but more selectively. May join rearguard efforts, but more discreetly and halfheartedly. (Some may eventually have a change of heart.)
Vocal Opposition
In the Moment:Open opposition; will vote against change.
Afterward: Will try to overturn; will continue rearguard efforts even while gradually losing. (Dead-enders are far more common than converts.)
Full (or Professional) Opposition
In the Moment: Unabashed opposition and campaigning; will vote against change.
Afterward:Will try to overturn; will continue rearguard efforts even while gradually losing. When utterly defeated, will publicly try to appropriate progress they opposed and whitewash own history. (Often will still try to overturn progress, but more discreetly.)
